Rise Of The Zombie Movie Review

Is any of this interesting? No. Neil’s conversion to cannibal is too tedious to even work as unintentional comedy. The story is ridiculous and the dialogue, foolish and stilted. Co-directors Kenny and Devaki Singh go from plain boring to flat-out gross. So there are close-ups of Neil chomping on human limbs and at one point, swallowing an eyeball. Are these visuals you want in your head? I’m going with one star.

If it wasn't for the film's super-sluggish pace, abstract and ineffective build-up, it had the potential to be different. An attempt is made to keep the feel and mood a tad imaginative by going low on dialogues and activities, but that only evokes boredom. 30 minutes into the movie and you're still waiting for the zombie to make an entry. The film has been shot in a documentary-drama style which disappoints as the treatment doesn't work, given the genre. There is no 'thrill' element at all, an absolute necessity here. The 'silent nothingness' goes on forever. The film becomes a gore-fest, once the zombie starts munching on human and animal flesh. Though bloodshed is what you expect from this movie, and it provides it in abundance, nowhere does it manage to truly scare you. It grosses you out.Rise of the Zombie is a one-man, one-line story which fails to keep you hooked.

Rise of the Zombie' needed more attention in the screenplay department because the tempo remains constant throughout the film. It becomes glaring when we can more or less predict the climax. 'Rise of the Zombie' could have become a better film if the makers would have devised a way of showing a connection between the gloomy environment of the mountains and the mystical origin of the zombie, still it has moments where the hard labour on part of the crew is visible. Watch 'Rise of the Zombie' if you are a die hard zombie fan and possess an appetite for blood and gore.

With an unfulfilling end and a tacky teaser of the sequel, expectations aren't essentially high from the upcoming episodes. However a better idea, possibly, would have been to club the chapters and present the zombie chronicle as a whole - cutting off the individual excess and adding more collective meat. While still arguable, that could perhaps have been a more gratifying experience!
